Fischerspooner's #1 is an immaculately crafted piece of work. A ?2 million record deal will do that for you.
I was very impressed by the album - track by track it keeps you grooving to a fairly standard 80s aesthetic (new eighties - it does not sound twenty years old). It even includes the necessary ballad. The album as a whole reminds me a lot of most of the earlier Depeche Mode albums. Every track leads you to the next, slight variation and plenty of emotion that doesn't quite sell out. It feels contrived, but I don't know why I'm looking for emotional sincerity in Fisherspooner.
After gaining cult fame with the track, "Emerge" - which is getting a lot of play now as the first hit off the album - there was a much-hyped bidding war over their signing for the full album. As another one of Larry Tee's "electroclash" acts, New York was bombarded with information about this, and the gay community is definitely getting a kick out of once again setting standards. Casey Spooner and Warren Fischer combine fashion, art and music and put on one hell of a show. And they take some risks - the fashion/art package is not unlike those of the eighties, but it hasn't been seen in a while.
